Introduction to Makeup Foundation [Part 1 of 3]

Foundation (Cosmetic)

Why do you need to use foundation?
To cover flaws, to even out skin tone, to brighten your complexion and provide a dewy look

Is it compulsory to use foundation?
No and Yes.
No if you are gifted with flawless, luminiscent skin. So, show it off already~!
Yes, if you're like most of us...not so much gifted but still grateful ^_^V

So, here's a quick guide to the many types of foundation available in the market. Please take note that PRICE of product DO NOT determine the QUALITYof each item. Therefore, you may pay more....

thinking you'll get the best but bo-hoo chances are it won't be the best. Please understand that every skin has its own attitude, some great products make work on others but it does not necessarily be suitable for you.

My advise?
Get some samples before purchasing foundation, especially those really, really expensive bagai nak giler ones. And while you're shopping for the most suitable foundation, bring a friend whom you can rely on for honest opinions.

Types of Foundation (more or less)

 Liquid
- Usually packaged in a bottle or tube
- Application with foundation/stippling brush, damp/dry face sponge or with your fingers
- Coverage: Ranges from sheer, medium to heavy
- Can sometimes be messy due to its packaging
- Also comes in gel form in a tube which create less mess
- Easy to blend for everyday usage

Cream
- Comes in a jar/tub/compact casing
- Texture is thick, rich & luxurious
- Coverage: Medium to Heavy
- Application with brush or flat face sponge
- Quick, clean and mess-free application
- Texture is usually creamy & thick making it difficult to blend smoothly

Mineral
- Mostly found in powder form, can sometimes be turned into liquid by adding some water
- Application with Kabuki brush or foundation brush
- When applying, needs to lightly press onto face for longer wear
- Coverage: Medium to heavy
- Will seep into wrinkles and face uneven-ness
- Quite hard to blend

Mousse / Whipped Foundation
- Took the market by a storm when it was first introduced
- Texture is rich, thick but lightweight
- Mousse are usually costly because of the added air & specialised packaging
- Easy application using a brush or fingers
- Coverage: Heavy
- Blending is easy as it glides smoothly

Powder
- Available in a normal compact case. May be mistaken for compact powder
- Application using a kabuki brush, a thick mop-top brush or sponge provided by manufacturer
- Coverage: Medium to heavy
- Matte finishing but may cake-up by midday
- Easy to use and be carried around

How do you know which one fits you?
The key is in YOUR SKIN.

Type of Skin vs. Most Suitable Foundation

Dry Skin
- Best with Cream Foundation
- Others: Liquid for dry skin, Mineral

Normal Skin
- Best with anything except Powder
- Others: Mineral, Mousse

Combination/ Oily T-Zone
- Best with Liquid
- Others: Powder

Oily & Acne-Prone
- Best with Liquid
- Others: Powder, mousse but no,no to mineral as it will cause break up

As for me, I love using Liquid makeup foundation because I'm always late and in a hurry. Using damp sponge is so fast and convenient for people like me ;)

So, that's it for now. Nanti kalau I cakap panjang lebar, mengantuk pulak you all. Haha.
I will discuss more about Foundation in my upcoming entries - 'Tips on Choosing The Right Colour for your Skintone...'

Till then, good luck and stay flawless...

  1. wow sukanya the tips :))
i've been using only liquid type as far as i can remember.. to look as natural as possible (tak macam ditempek oleh topeng =,=) masa mousse foundation tu keluar dulu rasa nak cuba je..

oh tapi so far i tau guna my fingers je blend the foundation to face (which sometimes look nasty & comot tangan, tapi tak penah tau which suitable sponge used for that purpose and how to use sponge haha.. - or maybe coz i always think usage of sponge is only when you want a heavy coverage. true or not?)

  2. Hey dear,
You never fail to comment :)) Appreciate it <3

On foundation, I pun sapu dengan jari, but sometimes it's not smooth. If you don't want your makeup to look heavy, use a dry sponge instead of a damp one. Sebab kalau damp one memang ada tendecy to look smooth but fake. Sebab too smooth la pulak. hehe. It's the imperfection which makes us pretty ;)
